Teen Therapy & Counselling in Milton
A space of their own for teens, with support for parents, in Milton and online.
Adolescence brings a lot at once: school pressure, friendships and social media, identity, family changes, and decisions about the future. It's normal for teens to struggle at times, but when anxiety, low mood, anger or withdrawal start to take over, talking to someone outside the family can make a real difference.
Our therapists see teens in Milton and online. Sessions give young people a confidential space to talk in their own words, while parents and caregivers get the guidance they need to support them at home. Our goal is for your teen to feel heard, understood and more confident handling what comes next.
Common reasons families reach out
- Anxiety, worry, panic or school avoidance
- Low mood, withdrawal or loss of interest in things they used to enjoy
- Anger, conflict at home or impulsive behaviour
- Self-esteem, body image and identity questions
- Friendship problems, bullying and online pressures
- Big changes: separation or divorce, moving, a new school, a loss
- Neurodivergence, including ADHD and autism
- The move to post-secondary school, work or more independence
How teen counselling works
We usually begin by meeting with the teen and their parent or caregiver to understand what's happening and agree on goals. After that, most sessions are one-on-one with the teen. Their therapist explains the limits of confidentiality clearly, so everyone knows what stays private and when safety concerns would be shared.
Approaches are tailored to each young person and may include CBT and DBT skills for managing anxiety and emotions, mindfulness, creative and strength-based work, and practical problem-solving. Parent sessions or check-ins help you understand what your teen is working on and how to respond at home.
How parents can help
Parents often ask what they can do while their teen is in therapy. Small things matter: keep communication open without pushing for details, notice and name what your teen does well, and try to keep routines like sleep, meals and screen time steady. If you're worried about something specific, share it with the therapist so it can be part of the work.
It's also normal for things to feel harder before they feel easier, as teens start to talk about what's been bothering them. If you see sudden changes, such as talk of self-harm or not wanting to be alive, call or text 9-8-8 or go to the nearest emergency department. Your teen's therapist can help you plan for difficult moments.
Some families also benefit from a few family sessions to work on communication at home, or from parent-only sessions focused on your own stress and how to respond when your teen pushes you away.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I know what my teen talks about in therapy?
Teens need a private space to open up, so session details are generally kept confidential. Their therapist will explain the limits of confidentiality at the start, including when safety concerns must be shared, and can involve you through parent check-ins and shared goals.
Does my teen need to want to come?
It helps, but many teens are unsure at first. A free 15-minute consultation can help you and your teen get a feel for the process. Therapists are used to building trust with young people who are hesitant.
What ages do you see?
We see children from age 5, teens and young adults. For younger children, see our Child & Youth Counselling page.
Is teen counselling covered by insurance?
Many parents' extended health benefit plans cover sessions with Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers for dependants. We provide receipts after each session. Reduced-rate sessions with supervised student therapists are also available.
Can my teen book sessions on their own?
In Ontario, young people who are able to understand and make decisions about their own care may consent to counselling themselves. Most families start together, though. Call us and we'll talk through what makes sense for your teen's situation and how parents can be involved.
