Trauma & PTSD Therapy in Milton, Ontario
Trauma-informed care at your pace, in person in Milton or virtually across Ontario.
Trauma can come from a single event, such as an accident, an assault or a sudden loss, or from experiences that happened over months or years: growing up in an unsafe home, living with coercive control, racism, or working in a role where you are regularly exposed to distress. Long after the events themselves, the body and mind can stay on high alert.
Our therapists offer trauma-informed therapy in Milton and online. That means safety, choice and collaboration come first. You decide what you share and when, and the work moves at a pace your nervous system can handle.
How trauma can show up
- Intrusive memories, nightmares or flashbacks
- Feeling constantly on guard, jumpy or easily startled
- Numbness, disconnection or feeling far away from your own life
- Avoiding reminders, places or conversations
- Shame, self-blame or a sense that you are 'too much' or 'not enough'
- Difficulty trusting others, or repeating painful relationship patterns
- Physical tension, exhaustion or trouble sleeping
What to expect when you start
Before your first session, you can book a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation to ask questions and get a sense of whether a therapist feels like a good fit. Feeling safe with your therapist matters a great deal in trauma work, and it is okay to take your time choosing.
Your first appointments focus on getting to know you: what brings you in, what support you have, what helps when things feel overwhelming, and what you would like to be different. Your therapist will explain their approach, answer your questions about confidentiality, and check in regularly about pacing. You can pause, slow down or change direction at any point.
Over time, many people find that reminders lose some of their intensity, that they can notice their body's alarm signals earlier, and that they relate to themselves with more understanding. Everyone's path is different, and your therapist will check in on progress with you rather than follow a fixed timeline.
Our approach to trauma therapy
Early sessions focus on stability: understanding your responses, building grounding skills and making sure you have support in place. Trauma reactions often make sense once you understand what your nervous system learned in order to survive, and that understanding alone can bring relief.
Depending on your needs and your therapist's training, the work may include somatic (body-based) approaches, attachment-focused therapy, narrative therapy, CBT and DBT skills, and mindfulness. Our team includes a Certified Trauma Professional and a therapist with EMDR training. We also work with complex and relational trauma, high-conflict and controlling relationships, and the effects of trauma on first responders and front-line workers.
Some clients choose to combine therapy with NeurOptimal® neurofeedback, a non-invasive form of brain training we offer at our Milton office.
Safety comes first
If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8 (Suicide Crisis Helpline) any time, or call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department. Therapy is not an emergency service.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to talk about the details of what happened?
No. Trauma-informed therapy doesn't require you to retell everything. Many people start by building stability and coping skills, and only explore memories if and when it feels right. You stay in control of what you share.
Do you offer EMDR in Milton?
Our team includes a therapist with EMDR training, alongside other trauma-informed approaches. Ask us during your free consultation and we'll help you find the approach and therapist that fit your situation.
Do you work with first responders and front-line workers?
Yes. Our founder, Garion Sparks-Austin, works with front-line workers and first responders, and our team supports people in high-stress, public-facing roles with discretion.
Is trauma therapy covered by insurance?
Many extended health benefit plans cover sessions with Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers. We provide receipts for you to submit. Some programs, such as workplace or first-responder benefits, have their own rules, so check your plan.
Can trauma therapy be done virtually?
Yes. Many people find it easier to begin trauma work from a familiar, private space at home. Virtual sessions are available anywhere in Ontario, and your therapist will plan with you for grounding and support after sessions. In-person sessions are available at our office at 243 Main St E in Milton.
