Grief Counselling

Grief & Loss Counselling in Milton, Ontario

A steady place to grieve, in person in Milton or virtually across Ontario.

Grief doesn't follow a schedule. After the death of someone you love, it can arrive in waves: some days manageable, others overwhelming. It can also follow losses that others don't always recognise, such as a pregnancy loss, the end of a marriage, estrangement from family, a diagnosis, or the loss of the life you expected to have.

Grief counselling gives you a place to be honest about what this loss means to you, without needing to be 'okay' for anyone else. Our therapists in Milton and online offer support that is gentle, practical and paced by you.

When grief counselling can help

  • You feel stuck, numb, or unable to function the way you did before
  • Guilt, regret or anger keep coming back
  • The loss was sudden, traumatic or complicated by a difficult relationship
  • You're supporting others and have no space for your own grief
  • Anniversaries, holidays or milestones feel unbearable
  • You are grieving a loss others don't acknowledge
  • A child or teen in your family is grieving and you're not sure how to help

What grief counselling looks like

There is no 'right way' to grieve, and counselling isn't about moving on or forgetting. Sessions might involve telling the story of your loss, exploring the relationship you had, making space for difficult feelings, and finding ways to carry the person or what you've lost into your life going forward.

Your therapist may draw on narrative, emotion-focused, mindfulness-based and meaning-centred approaches, and on spiritually integrated support if that matters to you. For children and teens, grief work often includes play and creative expression, with guidance for parents and caregivers.

Grief after different kinds of loss

Every loss carries its own weight. A death after a long illness can bring exhaustion alongside sadness, and sometimes relief that is hard to admit. A sudden or traumatic death may leave shock, unanswered questions and intrusive images. Losing a parent, a partner, a child, a friend or a pet can each reshape daily life in different ways.

Some losses are rarely talked about: pregnancy loss, infertility, the end of a relationship, a family member who is still alive but no longer part of your life, or the loss of health, work or a sense of identity. These are real losses, and they deserve care and acknowledgement too.

In counselling, there is room for all of it, including mixed feelings. You don't have to have the right words. Many people find that, over time, grief changes shape. The loss remains part of their story, but it becomes possible to hold it alongside the rest of life again, with more space for memories that bring comfort as well as pain.

If grief feels like too much

If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8 (Suicide Crisis Helpline) any time, or call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department. Therapy is not an emergency service.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon after a loss should I start grief counselling?

There's no right time. Some people reach out within weeks, others months or years later. If grief is affecting your sleep, work, relationships or sense of yourself, it's a reasonable time to talk to someone.

Do you offer grief counselling for children and teens?

Yes. Our team supports children and teens through grief using age-appropriate approaches, including play and creative work, and helps parents and caregivers support them at home.

Is there a more affordable option for grief counselling?

Yes. Supervised student therapists offer sessions at a reduced rate; ask us about current rates. Sessions with Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers are covered by many extended health plans.

Can I do grief counselling virtually?

Yes. Virtual sessions are available anywhere in Ontario, and in-person sessions are available at our office at 243 Main St E in Milton.

Is it normal to still be grieving after a year or more?

Yes. Grief has no deadline, and many people find the second year harder than the first, once the initial support from others has faded. If grief still feels as intense as it did at first, or is getting in the way of daily life, counselling can help.
