Couples Therapy & Marriage Counselling in Milton
For couples who want to understand each other better, in Milton and online.
Most couples who come to us aren't on the edge of breaking up. They're tired of having the same argument, feeling more like roommates than partners, or struggling to talk about something big: a move, children, money, intimacy, an affair, or whether to stay together at all.
Couples therapy gives you both a structured, neutral space to slow those conversations down. Our therapists in Milton and online help couples understand the patterns that keep them stuck and practise new ways of connecting.
What couples therapy can help with
- Communication that turns into arguments or shutting down
- Recurring conflict about the same issues
- Rebuilding trust after betrayal or an affair
- Emotional distance and loss of intimacy
- Big transitions: a new baby, blended families, career changes, retirement
- Differences in values, culture, family expectations or parenting
- Deciding whether to stay together, or how to separate respectfully
How it works
Your first session is usually together, to understand your history as a couple and what each of you hopes for. Some therapists also meet with each partner individually early on. From there, sessions focus on the patterns between you rather than on deciding who is right.
Our team includes a therapist trained in the Gottman Method (Levels 1 and 2), an approach based on research into what helps relationships last, alongside emotion-focused, attachment-informed and solution-focused approaches. Couples sessions are typically longer than individual sessions, giving each partner time to be heard.
Couples therapy is not a fit when there is ongoing abuse or coercive control. In that situation, individual support and safety planning come first, and we can help with that.
What to expect over time
Couples often notice early on that simply having a structured place to talk lowers the temperature at home. Sessions help each partner name what they need, understand the other's reactions, and practise repairing after an argument instead of letting it build. Your therapist may suggest small exercises to try between sessions.
Progress isn't about never disagreeing. Healthy couples argue too. The goal is to fight more fairly, feel heard, and turn back toward each other more often. Some couples come for a focused series of sessions around a specific issue; others prefer longer-term support. Your therapist will check in with you both regularly about how things are going.
Therapy can also help couples from different cultural or faith backgrounds talk about family expectations, traditions and roles, and couples navigating neurodivergence, a health condition, or a big life change make room for each other's needs.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my partner doesn't want to come?
It's common for one partner to be more hesitant. A free 15-minute consultation can answer questions for both of you. If your partner isn't ready, individual sessions focused on the relationship can still help.
Do you offer Gottman Method couples therapy in Milton?
Our team includes a Registered Psychotherapist trained in the Gottman Method (Levels 1 and 2), who sees couples in Milton and virtually across Ontario.
Is couples counselling covered by insurance?
Many extended health plans cover couples sessions with Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers, usually under one partner's plan. Receipts are provided after each session; check your plan's details.
Can couples therapy help if we're thinking about separating?
Yes. Therapy can help you make that decision with more clarity, and if you do separate, it can help you do it with less conflict, which matters especially when children are involved.
Do you see same-sex and LGBTQ2S+ couples?
Yes. Couples of all identities, orientations and relationship structures are welcome. Our approach is affirming and focused on what each couple wants for their relationship.
Can we do couples therapy online from different locations?
Yes, as long as both partners are located in Ontario at the time of the session. Virtual sessions use a secure video platform, and many couples with different work schedules or locations find this the easiest way to attend together.
