Neurofeedback & Therapy

Integrated 90-minute sessions combining brain training with psychotherapy in Milton, Ontario.

Overview

NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback & Therapy

Combining NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback with therapy offers an integrative approach to mental health and overall well-being — addressing both the neurological and emotional dimensions of healing in a single session.

NeurOptimal® works with the brain's natural ability to self-regulate by providing real-time feedback to the central nervous system. This supports improved sleep, emotional balance, stress reduction, and mental clarity through a gentle, non-invasive, medication-free process.

When paired with therapy, neurofeedback helps create a more regulated and resilient nervous system, allowing clients to engage more fully in the therapeutic process. As the brain becomes more flexible and efficient, clients may find therapy more accessible and engaging — with greater insight, emotional capacity, and ability to implement meaningful change.

This combined approach is particularly beneficial for clients who feel "stuck" in traditional talk therapy, those dealing with trauma responses that make emotional processing difficult, or anyone seeking a more holistic path to mental wellness that addresses both mind and brain.

Together, neurofeedback and therapy support healing at both neurological and emotional levels, which may support improvements in mood, focus, performance, and overall quality of life.

The Process

How a Combined Session Works

Phase 1: Neurofeedback Training (approximately 33 minutes)

Your session begins with NeurOptimal® neurofeedback. Sensors are placed on your scalp and ears to detect brain activity. You relax and listen to music while the system provides real-time feedback, gently guiding your brain toward greater efficiency and self-regulation. This phase helps calm the nervous system and prepare you for deeper therapeutic work.

Phase 2: Psychotherapy (approximately 50 minutes)

Following neurofeedback, you transition into a full therapy session with your Registered Psychotherapist. Many clients report feeling more grounded, open, and emotionally available after brain training — allowing for more productive and insightful therapeutic conversations. Your therapist tailors the approach to your goals and current state.

Integration & Continuity

Because both modalities happen in the same session with the same practitioner, your therapist can observe how neurofeedback affects your state and adjust the therapeutic approach accordingly. This integrated model creates a feedback loop where brain training enhances therapy, and therapy reinforces the neural changes promoted by neurofeedback.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Combined Neurofeedback & Therapy

How is a combined session different from doing neurofeedback and therapy separately?

In a combined session, both modalities happen back-to-back with the same practitioner in a single 90-minute appointment. This creates a seamless experience where the calming effects of neurofeedback directly enhance the therapy that follows. Your therapist can observe your neurological state and adjust their approach in real-time, creating a more integrated and efficient healing process than scheduling them separately.

Do I need to have done neurofeedback before to try a combined session?

No prior neurofeedback experience is required. Your practitioner will explain the process and ensure you're comfortable before beginning. Many clients start directly with combined sessions. However, if you prefer, you can try standalone neurofeedback sessions first to experience brain training on its own before adding the therapy component.

How often should I schedule combined sessions?

Most clients benefit from weekly combined sessions, especially at the beginning. As you progress, your therapist may recommend adjusting frequency based on your goals and how your brain is responding to training. Some clients transition to bi-weekly sessions once they've established a strong foundation, while others maintain weekly sessions for ongoing support.

Is the combined session covered by insurance?

Many extended health benefit plans in Ontario cover psychotherapy services provided by Registered Psychotherapists (RP) and Registered Social Workers (RSW). The combined session may be covered under your psychotherapy benefits. We provide official receipts for insurance submission. Check with your provider for specific coverage details regarding session length and combined modalities.

What if I only want neurofeedback without the therapy component?

Absolutely — we offer standalone NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback sessions (45 minutes, $135) for clients who prefer brain training without talk therapy. You can switch between combined and standalone sessions based on your needs at any time. Some clients alternate between the two depending on what they need in a given week.
